James Groom

James Groom has worked for leading law firms in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, specialising in the areas of corporate and commercial law. He has also worked as senior corporate counsel and company secretary for the Australasian operations of one of the world’s largest financial services organisations.

James' practice is extensive and covers private equity transactions, financial services, corporate governance and compliance, negotiating and documenting commercial transactions of all types.

James has a particular interest in assisting start up companies with establishing appropriate systems and processes. He also likes to draw on his international experience to assist clients with international expansion.

James presents frequently on compliance and corporate governance matters. He has degrees in law and arts (first class honours in political science) from the University of Tasmania.




Jenny-Ellen Kennedy

Jenny-Ellen Kennedy commenced practising as a solicitor in Melbourne, where she developed an extensive and well-rounded general commercial practice. She relocated to Hobart in 2005.

Jenny-Ellen's experience includes; financial services licensing, negotiating and drafting commercial contracts of all types; property matters including negotiating and drafting commercial leases; liquor licensing; industry and corporate compliance, and good business practices. Jenny-Ellen also has extensive experience in areas relating to media services, including negotiating service contracts, defamation and protection and commercialisation of intellectual property rights.

Jenny-Ellen has degrees in arts and law from Melbourne University and Bond University respectively, and is admitted to practice in Victoria and Tasmania.




Alice Herbon

Alice Herbon recently returned to Hobart after working in Sydney at a leading Australian Law firm where she specialised in major projects. Alice has a broad range of experience in commercial matters including extensive experience in negotiation, drafting and advice in relation to major infrastructure projects, supply contracts and design and construction contracts for both public and private sector clients. Alice has drafting experience over a range of legal documents and structures including major Australian Standard form contracts, PPP project documents, as well as joint venture agreements, teaming agreements and security instruments.

Alice has a Bachelor of Arts and Laws from the University of Tasmania and has recently completed her masters in Foreign Investment Law.




Debbie Ninnes

Debbie Ninnes joined James Groom & Co in 2007 and is a much valued member of staff.
